What's in a Calorie?

When you begin searching for a weight loss program, you should know what you are trying to do and what losing weight actually means.  The most important thing to think about when losing weight is the calorie: a calorie is a unit of measure and what it measures is the energy in food.  Since people need energy to move, speak, work and live, we need to know how many calories will do this efficiently. 

If you are trying to maintain your weight, 2000 calories a day is sufficient.  If you are trying to lose weight, the general thought is that 1500 calories a day is acceptable.  Depending on what weight loss program you choose, this number can go up or down.  Another important thing to remember is that some calories are "empty", meaning they have no nutritional value. Hence, we dieters avoid soda pop, candy and chips and replace them with fruits, veggies and whole grains.
